Eight crime scenes along a roughly seven-mile route form the investigation into the October 23 shootings in Trappes and La Verrière, west of Paris, France's national anti-terrorism prosecutor Olivier Christen says.
At a Paris press conference carried by French news channel BFMTV, Christen announced an investigation into murder and attempted murder classified as terrorist offenses, with the aggravating circumstance of a racist or religious motive. Those remain the grounds of the investigation despite the suspect's denial of a racist motive.
Christen said Kévin T., the suspect named in the video's title, does not dispute the acts themselves. The distinction is important: the prosecutor is reporting the suspect's position, not announcing that investigators have dropped the suspected racist dimension of the attack.
The prosecutor identified the person killed as Pengo Bosio Vangi, a French national. He reported four people seriously injured and three with minor injuries, as well as eight others who were targeted but not physically struck. That account gives a broader injury toll than the description accompanying the upload, which mentions five injured.
According to Christen, police arrested the suspect in nearby Coignières shortly after the shootings. Investigators seized a Sten submachine gun and ammunition, and counted 128 rounds fired. He also described a homemade trap at the suspect's residence in Plaisir that police specialists and bomb-disposal officers neutralized.
Christen outlined psychiatric examinations and said police custody had resumed after a temporary suspension. He also warned against circulating recordings of the attacks on social media, citing penalties under French press law.
Four people from the suspect's family and friendship circle who had been held for questioning were released without prosecution at this stage, the prosecutor said.
