Mexico's Azteca Noticias reports that the costume, made with corn husks normally used to wrap tamales, caught fire after coming into contact with a votive candle during a secondary-school Day of the Dead festival in the state of Hidalgo.

The footage shows people gathering around the student to help. A presenter repeatedly asks the audience to remain calm over a microphone, saying teachers will extinguish the fire. Adults use clothing to smother the flames, while calls for water can be heard.

Catrina costumes depict elegantly dressed skeletons, a familiar figure in Mexico's Day of the Dead celebrations honoring the deceased. The festival setting included offerings arranged around the stage.

According to the report, Hidalgo's education department says it remains in contact with the student's family to follow up after the incident.
