The voice is artificial; the answers, Mexico's Azteca Noticias says, came from detained naval officer Manuel Roberto Farías Laguna. In a written interview presented by Manuel López San Martín, Farías Laguna denies involvement in illegal fuel trafficking and accuses authorities of using him and his brother as scapegoats.
The distinction matters throughout the report. López San Martín explains that an interview in person or by telephone was not possible, so Farías Laguna answered a questionnaire from Altiplano prison. Artificial intelligence was then used to recreate his responses. This is not a recording of him speaking from detention.
Farías Laguna says he never communicated with the people prosecutors say he contacted and took no action connected with the crimes he is accused of. He also says the events in question occurred after he had stopped working at the Secretariat of the Navy.
The wider investigation concerns alleged fuel imports disguised under other product classifications to avoid taxes, a practice known in Mexico as huachicol fiscal. The case has involved accusations against naval officers, customs personnel and private businesses.
About five minutes into the report, Farías Laguna says he knows of alleged involvement by Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, commonly called Andy, and Senator Adán Augusto López Hernández. López Beltrán is a Morena politician and the son of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador; López Hernández served as interior secretary under López Obrador. These are Farías Laguna's accusations, not findings established by this interview.
The upload is titled "ENTREVISTA EXCLUSIVA | Farías Laguna señala a Andy López Beltrán y Adán Augusto", meaning "Exclusive interview: Farías Laguna points the finger at Andy López Beltrán and Adán Augusto."
Farías Laguna also accuses prosecutors of overlooking evidence and calls his prosecution unjust. Returning to the studio, López San Martín closes by questioning how Mexico's judicial authorities will respond to the allegations raised in the written answers.
