Prosecutors in Chiapas are investigating personal revenge as a possible motive for the killing of a woman and a child, according to Mexico's Azteca Noticias. The report says authorities have not explained what lay behind that suspected motive.
Correspondent Alberto Chamé Lira reports from Ostuacán, a municipality in the southern Mexican state, where the killings were followed by violence against two detained suspects over the weekend. Footage shows a crowd forcing its way into the police station to remove the men from custody.
According to Chamé, both suspects were beaten, one was killed and authorities rescued the other alive. The surviving detainee remains under investigation in connection with the original killings. The report describes the case as a double femicide, the killing of women or girls because of their gender.
Chamé says a separate investigation has been opened into the fatal mob attack. The report thus follows two criminal inquiries: one into the original killings and another into the violence against those detained on suspicion of involvement.
Mexico’s southernmost state, bordering Guatemala and the Pacific Ocean. Its capital and largest city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
