Dilapidated schools and too few staff: French students march in Lille and Paris

An Associated Press live stream of the protests drew a crowd far beyond the channel's usual audience, and its comment section is arguing over the title.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 332,955 views a day, 18 times a normal first day on this channel (19,010).

The grievances, as Associated Press describes them, are basic: French schools short of money, buildings in poor repair and not enough staff. Students took them to the streets of Lille and Paris, and the agency's cameras followed live.

That stream, "LIVE: Students protest in France for school funding," passed 200,000 views within ten hours. A live broadcast on this channel usually ends its whole first day near 19,000. AP streams many events from around the world, and most of them draw a modest, steady audience. A school protest in two French cities is not the sort of event that usually stands out.

The next day's streams show how unusual that is. A Nuri rocket carrying 15 satellites lifting off from South Korea's Naro Space Center, and two broadcasts marking the third anniversary of the October 7 attack, from Gaza City and the Nova festival site, were all still in the low thousands.

The comment section is busy with one question: what is this protest really about? Many viewers dispute that school funding is the whole story. Others argue over whether the footage shows a protest or something rougher, and a few doubt it shows the current marches at all. One French-speaking commenter lists the complaints in detail: bathrooms without doors, cold classrooms in winter and poor cafeteria food.

Lille, the larger city in the stream's two-city lineup outside the capital, sits close to the Belgian border and is the main city of the Hauts-de-France region.
