Anthony Gugliotta's new camera bag review isn't an upgrade ultimatum

His Shimoda Action X V3 walkthrough finds room for bigger lenses, but questions the switch to a mesh back panel.

  1. 0:45The deeper X35 accommodates standing telephoto lenses and DSLR core units.
  2. 2:05Revised exterior fittings include an enlarged side-access panel for retrieving a camera.
  3. 5:18Anthony worries the more breathable mesh back panel may pill faster than the previous solid backing.
  4. 9:20The new modular top inserts work only with V3 bags, not earlier versions.
  5. 15:05Anthony says a V2 that remains in good condition and suits your needs probably doesn't require replacing.

Anthony Gugliotta has spent years using the Shimoda Action X 30 V2, which makes his verdict on its successor particularly useful: if your existing bag is in good shape and working for you, you probably don't need to upgrade.

That practical streak runs through "Shimoda Action X V3: What's New? (and What I Don't Love)", the most watched of his three new uploads, with roughly 20,000 views. He demonstrates the deeper X35, which accommodates standing telephoto lenses and DSLR core units, and the enlarged side opening that makes getting a camera out easier. His reservation is the new mesh back panel: more breathable, yes, but he worries it may pill faster than the old solid backing. The description discloses commission-earning links.

Viewers have their own packing puzzles. Some ask whether older core units and newer shoulder straps can cross generations; another wants space for camera equipment and a coffee-making setup, sometimes with an axe along too. There's also interest in Anthony's homemade miniature pouches, a small accessory competing for attention with the backpacks themselves.

The other uploads brought a forgotten LTT screwdriver and a photography-composition tip. Meanwhile, his two Sony FX5 videos remain active, though the Shimoda review currently draws the most daily views of any individual upload.

The channel collected just over half a million views during the week, with subscribers unchanged. Daily viewing is now well below its usual level. Nearby in size, Alex Ziskind had a busier viewing week, while AppleTrack and Tyler Stalman also had unchanged subscriber counts.

For photographers considering the new inserts, Anthony supplies one especially useful catch: they only work with the V3, not earlier bags.

  • Could you share more about the mini multicam pouches you DIY-ed ? Pretty cool to make one myself

  • At the 2:19 mark anyone else see a dinosaur in the background? 😂 Those fallen logs + background separation total = dino 🦖

  • I have the Action X40 V2 and i do think some of the upgrades in the V3 are great, but i do miss the removability of the drop pocket (i've used it on the waist belt and on other backpacks) as well as the teal colour from the women's line, which is my favourite colour by far 😊

  • I think I didn’t hear you talking about this, but is it possible to put the new shoulder straps from the v3 on the v2? That would be a massive upgrade.

  • Great overview! I’m currently using a Nomatic Everyday Daypack 25L and I like it, but it’s started to feel too small. I love being out shooting, and I usually bring coffee gear along too, like a stove, a coffee pot and sometimes even an axe. I’ve been looking at the Action X V3 but haven’t settled on a size. For that kind of setup, would you go with the 30L or jump to the 35L?

  • do you know what the min waist size the new adjustable hip strap support?
