Rachel Apa was two miles from finishing the New York City Marathon when she collapsed, ABC News reports. The 24-year-old athlete died of rhabdomyolysis, according to Aaron Katersky's report in the November 3 edition of World News Tonight.
The segment arrives near the end of David Muir's election-night broadcast, after coverage of the congressional contests and severe weather in Florida. It adds a separate story of loss to a bulletin largely devoted to Americans voting and candidates awaiting results.
The broadcast also includes an update on the fatal Florida Learjet crash. Transportation correspondent Gio Benitez reports that an elevator, a flight-control surface, separated from the aircraft before impact. NTSB member Tom Chapman explains why that discovery matters: "Knowing that it was lost is a very important piece of evidence in terms of pointing us towards other things to investigate."
ABC's full bulletin drew roughly 960,000 views since yesterday. Katersky's marathon report begins at 15:41.
