Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Dr. Sanjeev Kumar has defeated sitting Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Nawal Kishore Yadav in Bihar's Legislative Council election, according to India's Hindi-language news channel Aaj Tak.
His victory forms part of a wider rejection of incumbents: the channel reports that sitting members lost all four teachers' constituency seats contested in Patna, Tirhut, Darbhanga and Saran. These are elections to the state's upper legislative chamber, not its main Legislative Assembly, and teachers' constituencies have a separate electorate of eligible teachers.
Reporting from Patna, Shashi Bhushan examines that pattern of incumbent defeats. The broadcast also includes an interview inside a car with Janata Dal (United) candidate Neeraj Kumar, who says he opposes the criminalization and commercialization of politics. In his own reaction, Sanjeev Kumar accuses the government of frustration and alleges disruption inside the counting hall.
Across the state border in Uttar Pradesh, the picture remains incomplete during the broadcast. An on-screen update says results have been declared for five of the eleven seats, with the anchor reporting victories for both the BJP and Samajwadi Party.
Samajwadi candidate Lal Bihari Yadav celebrates a substantial lead in the Varanasi teachers' constituency. Reporter Ashish Srivastava follows the continuing count from Lucknow, where footage shows BJP and Samajwadi workers scuffling outside the Ramabai counting center. The sequence does not establish who started the confrontation.
