An 88-year-old woman was rescued by a neighbor and a police officer after a suspicious fire broke out at her Abbotsford home while she slept, Australian broadcaster 7NEWS Australia reports.
Reporter Natasha Squarey describes an attacker fleeing the property in Sydney's inner west. Police are treating the fire as suspicious and seeking a person of interest. "We are deeming this suspicious. We are looking for one person of interest," Superintendent Christine McDonald says in the report.
The rescue is one of several Sydney emergencies covered in the October 27 bulletin. It opens with a man pacing on a rooftop at Allambie Heights, on the city's Northern Beaches, following a police pursuit. Riot police and negotiators have responded to the standoff; the opening footage does not show a resolution.
A separate court report presents security footage of Beau Lamarre-Condon surrendering at Bondi Police Station over the alleged murders of Jesse Baird and Luke Davies. Reporter Leonie Ryan pairs the footage with audio recordings as part of the ongoing trial coverage. In one recording, Lamarre-Condon identifies himself: "Just so you're not shocked, um, my name is Beau Lamarre."
From Canberra, political editor Mark Riley reports on Senator Fatima Payman's accusation that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is withholding resources from her office. Payman raises concerns about parliamentary office safety, prompting Don Farrell to call her suggestion "outrageous." The political coverage also looks ahead to inflation figures and their implications for interest-rate expectations, rather than reporting a new rate decision.
The bulletin reports that a male pedestrian was killed by a truck on the M7 motorway at Horsley Park. It closes abroad, with Ben Downie reporting from Israel on polling day, interviewing voters and examining the sharp divisions surrounding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
