One in three Australian households going hungry | 7NEWS
Young adults are the largest age group affected by food insecurity in Australia, Foodbank Australia chief executive Kylea Tink says, as the charity's annual Hunger Report documents households changing what they eat or missing meals altogether.
Speaking from Canberra to Australian broadcaster 7NEWS Australia, Tink identifies people aged 18 to 35 as the most affected age cohort. She also says nearly half of households with children experience food insecurity, describing a problem that is becoming more mainstream.
The report estimates that one in three Australian households experienced food insecurity over the past year, affecting about 3.5 million households.
The interview makes an important distinction about that finding. Tink explains that the survey measures more than anxiety about affording groceries: it includes people actively changing their eating habits, skipping meals or going without fresh food. The headline's description of households "going hungry" encompasses those different experiences, rather than a single measure of how often people miss meals.
Anchor Chris asks what sacrifices families are making and notes that the survey involved 6,000 people. Footage of workers and volunteers sorting and packing donated food accompanies the discussion, while Tink emphasizes that the need extends beyond the groups traditionally associated with food relief.
