Prisoner sues over Vegemite access
Access to Vegemite is the subject of a lawsuit brought by a high-security prisoner in the Australian state of Victoria, Australian broadcaster 7NEWS Australia reports.
The prisoner, Andre McKechnie, is suing the Department of Justice, arguing that being denied the spread has prevented him from enjoying his culture. Vegemite is a salty, dark yeast-extract spread closely associated with Australia, typically eaten thinly spread on buttered toast.
The brief report pairs archive footage of McKechnie being escorted by police with aerial views of a prison and images of Vegemite jars and toast. According to the broadcaster, McKechnie was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a 15-year non-parole period, for a murder committed in Queensland in the 1990s.
The October 26 bulletin said a verdict was expected that day. It does not include a ruling or explain the department's reasons for denying access.
A government department in the Australian state of Victoria, formally called the Department of Justice and Community Safety.
