Threatening Russia and Ukraine with 200% tariffs would do little to force a peace agreement because their trade with the United States is too limited, journalist and blogger Anton argues in a discussion with Anastasia Noritsyna on Ukraine's Channel 24 (24 Канал).
The interview intercuts Russian television broadcasts with commentary on diplomacy, reported Ukrainian strikes and living conditions in Russia. Its central argument is that Western attempts to find a settlement underestimate Vladimir Putin's objectives and overestimate Washington's economic leverage.
The opening footage shows Russian television presenter Olga Skabeyeva discussing a possible meeting between the leaders of Russia, the United States and China. Noritsyna asks whether major powers could carve up spheres of influence without Ukraine or Europe. Anton doubts such an arrangement is currently possible, discussing Russia's dependence on China. He separately predicts that Putin would refuse a direct meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump.
Later, the discussion turns to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's description of the conflict as being about Donbas, the eastern Ukrainian region, and his appeal for a diplomatic solution. Anton rejects that territorial framing: in his assessment, Putin seeks control over all of Ukraine, or its destruction, rather than a limited territorial settlement. He argues that concessions would not resolve that ambition.
Russian television clips provide another strand. The program juxtaposes criticism of continued energy trading during the war with Vladimir Solovyov's threats against Ukraine. It also plays military blogger Maxim Kalashnikov's warnings about Ukrainian missiles and drones targeting Russian energy infrastructure. Anton presents these broadcasts as contradictory messaging, not evidence of an imminent Russian victory.
Noritsyna reviews reports of strikes on a tax-service data center in Gorodets and military facilities in Voronezh and Perm Krai. The discussion does not independently establish the damage. It then contrasts Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov's calls for thrift with a Moscow balcony-rental advertisement and footage presented as showing a neglected Irkutsk hospital.
The final section questions proposals to restrict free IVF as a way to encourage earlier childbirth, before returning to Trump's tariff threat. It closes with the channel's report that Austria expelled four Russian diplomats on suspicion of espionage, followed by discussion of Putin's offer to supply fertilizer to the American market.
