Prosecutors confronted Naresh Bhatt with questions about internet searches and store purchases as they challenged his denial that he killed his wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt.
In the cross-examination carried by WUSA9, Bhatt acknowledged dismembering and concealing her body. But he denied murdering her or planning her death for months, the accusation that forms the title of the station's Part 12 upload. He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, concealing a dead body and defiling a dead body.
The distinction between what Bhatt admits and what he denies runs through the questioning. Prosecutors showed receipt photographs and pressed him about buying gloves, knives, trash bags and cleaning supplies. Bhatt said he routinely bought items near store registers without a specific purpose. Later, he acknowledged previously lying about Mamta running away, while insisting he was telling the truth on the stand.
The upload drew roughly 370,000 views in its first day, compared with fewer than a thousand for WUSA9's usual regular-length upload. It was the most watched of several trial videos drawing unusually large audiences that day.
A separate installment covers why Bhatt did not call 911 after he says he found Mamta dead. WUSA9 also posted a report featuring her supporters outside the courthouse, extending its coverage beyond the testimony itself.
