People broke into shops in central Frankfurt and stole sneakers and other goods after initially peaceful youth protests, according to Germany's WELT Nachrichtensender. The broadcaster's account cites dpa news agency reporters who witnessed the thefts, and says a specialist weapons shop was also attacked.
The live broadcast is billed as coverage of Halloween unrest in Berlin, Germany's capital. Its accompanying account, however, places particular emphasis on Frankfurt and Cologne, where WELT says the situation deteriorated after dark following demonstrations under the slogan "Gen Z regelt," roughly meaning "Gen Z takes charge."
According to the broadcaster, tens of thousands of young people took to the streets. WELT reports looting, smashed shop windows and Molotov cocktails thrown at police during the later unrest. Its account distinguishes the initially peaceful protests from the violence that followed, rather than describing the entire gatherings as violent.
In separate reporting from near Frankfurt's Konstablerwache square, correspondent Ben Schöffel describes bottles and firecrackers being thrown, with police deploying water cannon and an armored clearance vehicle. WELT's Cologne coverage also reports stone-throwing, pyrotechnics and police containing groups of demonstrators in side streets.
