The Cat in the Hat turns Thing 2 into a slapstick mystery
Warner Bros.' animated promo pairs an unanswered question with a fish slap, and viewers are supplying their own theories.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 132,813 views a day, 14 times a normal first day on this channel (9,145).
So the thing about Thing 2 is…. #TheCatInTheHat
"But I don't see a Thing 2," the boy says, holding a fishbowl. The red fish's response is to leap up and slap him across the face.
That is the setup for Warner Bros.' Short, "So the thing about Thing 2 is…. #TheCatInTheHat". It is a promotional clip for the animated movie, edited into a musical loop that makes the slap part of the beat. Around a wooden desk, the blue-haired Things wear an assortment of numbered shirts. The conspicuous gap is the joke.
The clip drew about 87,000 views in eleven hours, far ahead of the studio channel's usual Shorts start. In the comments, viewers repeat the forbidden question and speculate about whether Thing 2 could be connected to a monster in the trailer. The clip itself supplies no such answer.
Alongside the studio's other Cat promos about rhyming and telling the truth, this one takes a different route: ask where the missing Thing went, and the fish interrupts before the explanation can begin.
