Solar farms and desert rain: Matt Ferrell's 'Nobody Expected' video passes a million

The Undecided video, tagged with China's Talatan solar park, the Sahara and the UAE's rain program, pulled the whole channel to about a million views in a single day.

Why this story? The whole channel is running at 1,000,582 views a day, 12 times a normal day (82,576).

How Stopping Pollution Nearly Made Things WorseHow Stopping Pollution Nearly Made Things Worse

Matt Ferrell has spent the past few weeks weighing big energy ideas against each other, and his newest one asks a stranger question: what do enormous solar farms do to the weather around them? "Solar Panels Are Doing Something Nobody Expected" went up on Tuesday and has now passed a million views.

Its description keeps quiet about the subject, but the tags lay it out: the Talatan solar farm, Sahara solar farms, UAE rain enhancement, solar-induced rainfall and artificial heat islands. The previous upload had already pointed viewers toward a video called "How Solar Panels Make It Rain In The Desert". The idea has a scientific pedigree. A 2018 study in Science modeled giant solar and wind farms across the Sahara and found they could bring more rain and greenery to the region.

The video carried the channel with it. Undecided usually draws around 80,000 views a day, and on this day it came close to a million. Ferrell, who describes himself as a UI/UX designer by trade, followed up two days later with a companion piece under the same tags, "How Stopping Pollution Nearly Made Things Worse", which asks whether geoengineering can cause more problems than it solves.

Older titles are still working too. His look at China's giant compressed air battery is close to a million of its own, and "How Solar Is Beating Nuclear's Best Idea", from the small-reactor run we reported here, keeps adding viewers.
