The skeletons dance, brass bands march and towering figures move above the roadside crowds. Mexico City's Día de Muertos parade brings remembrance into the streets with glittering skull masks, decorated floats and dancers in colorful butterfly dresses.
Germany's ARD television news service, tagesschau, reports that about 1.6 million people joined the celebration. Its short film shows costumed figures riding motorized tricycles, musicians passing spectators and stilt walkers moving alongside enormous skeleton puppets.
But this particular street spectacle is much younger than the traditions it celebrates. The report explains that the capital introduced the parade as a tourist attraction a decade ago, inspired by a scene in the James Bond film Spectre.
The distinction matters: the movie inspired the modern parade, not the Day of the Dead itself. On November 1 and 2, families honor deceased relatives with colorful offerings at home and elaborately decorated graves. Those observances bring Indigenous traditions together with customs associated with the Catholic feasts of All Saints and All Souls.
A Mexican holiday, usually observed on November 1 and 2, when families and friends gather to remember loved ones who have died. It is also celebrated by communities of Mexican heritage elsewhere.
