A cruise bound for the Canary Islands ended before it left Bremerhaven: Mein Schiff 3 struck two container ships while trying to depart the northern German port.
Germany's ARD television news service, tagesschau, reports that a strong gust pushed the cruise ship toward the vessels moored at a terminal. Tugboats were assisting, but could not prevent the collisions. Presenter Felix Edeha explains the sequence over footage credited to Bremen Police.
The impact tore open the side of one container ship and also damaged the cruise ship, according to the report. All three vessels were prohibited from sailing. No one was injured, and Edeha says there was apparently no water entering any of the ships.
For the passengers, the collision meant the entire cruise was canceled. The report closes with questions about why the ship attempted to leave in those weather conditions. Its accompanying description says police are investigating a possible breach of the duty of care; it does not announce a finding of responsibility.
