Tackle2thePeople puts the fish rack back on the menu

Grilled tautog leftovers supplied the week's most-watched upload, alongside a major overhaul of the crew's old Seacraft.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Stop Wasting Fish…Do this Instead!Stop Wasting Fish…Do this Instead!

Tackle2thePeople takes a cleaver to a filleted tautog rack, lays it on a grill tray with chopped red onions and gives it Montreal steak seasoning. A squeeze of lime finishes the job. Then a spoon lifts big flakes of meat from around the ribs and spine, making the case for keeping what might otherwise go in the bin.

"Stop Wasting Fish…Do this Instead!" drew about 89,000 views, the largest audience among five new uploads. The comments became a useful extension of the cooking lesson: viewers discussed saving heads for soup, making stock from racks and discovering tuna collars. Others brought memories of eating whole fried or grilled fish, with little left but bones.

Keeping useful things going also shaped the boat uploads. "Can we turn this Old Boat into a Fish Catching Machine?" follows work on the crew's commercially fished Potter Seacraft with Scituate Boatworks. The description explains the practical problems behind the overhaul: too much weight at the stern, a poor ride and water coming aboard on every trip. "Upgrading our 1972 Potter Seacraft" gives the project another place in the week's schedule.

The longer boat upload is currently drawing views fastest, with "TOO MUCH Sea Bass" close behind. Across the channel, the week brought nearly four million views while subscribers held steady. Daily viewing is now comfortably above its usual level.

Among nearby outdoors channels, Serkan Doğada had a particularly big week, while thruhikers and Millennial Farmer drew smaller weekly audiences than Tackle2thePeople. Here, the most useful discovery was waiting on the cutting board after the fillets were gone.

What viewers say

  • Funny enough, I just saw a video from Reed the Fishmonger on using the heads and skeletons. I personally think the collar is the best part of the fish.

  • I had yellowfin tuna collars for the first time the other day. Boy have I been missing out. Smh

  • I totally agree! I cook fish whole, except for the biggest fish. And the racks and heads usually go into fishhead soup. My racks don't have that much meat left on them!

  • This is me with Blueies.
I'm on the boat, catch a bluefish.
When they fillet my fish, I have to ask them to let me keep the head.
Bluefish has some very tender cheek meat underneath all those cartilage pieces; looks like lump crab meat.
  • I’m not Asian and I grew up eating whole pan fried fish (local river trout) so the concept of filleting and throwing most of the fish out was unbeknownst to me for a long time.
  • Right on. I do this with snapper and grouper.

  • Glad you're a mindful fisherman! Of course there's much more that fillets. Are the tog racks good for making the fish broth?
