The work of governing is moving back to Brasília after Brazil's presidential runoff. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met the leaders of both houses of Congress at the Alvorada presidential residence, a day after winning a fourth term, Brazil's SBT News reports.
Senate President Davi Alcolumbre and Chamber of Deputies President Hugo Motta attended the meeting. Correspondent João Gabriel Freitas says Lula also met ministers and called for national unity and institutional dialogue among the executive, legislature and judiciary.
The report's central distinction is between accepting the election result and supporting the next government. Several center and center-right parties sent congratulations, including União Brasil, MDB, Podemos, PSDB, PSD and Republicanos. Those messages acknowledge Lula's victory; they do not, by themselves, establish a governing coalition.
Flávio Bolsonaro's Liberal Party, known as the PL, also recognized the presidential result proclaimed by the Superior Electoral Court. But its statement maintained that questions raised about the election needed clarification. The segment reads that qualification without establishing any electoral irregularity.
For Lula, a Workers' Party president, the meetings begin the political negotiations needed for the term starting in January 2027. Freitas closes by emphasizing the challenge of assembling congressional support: the presidential vote is settled in the report, but the parliamentary arrangements for the next administration still require negotiation.
