Teenager Shimada brings crowd to its feet with golden routine

How does Mao Shimada begin a gold-winning free skate? With a triple axel that prompts the commentator to call it "a dream". Then comes a quadruple toe loop.

The Japanese teenager's performance at Skate Canada in Kelowna has drawn about 64,000 views on SBS Sport, roughly sixty times the channel's usual first-day audience for a Short. The broadcaster says the routine earned her gold and a standing ovation.

Its upload, "Teenager Shimada brings crowd to its feet with golden routine", opens with a glimpse of the celebration before returning to the skating. After those opening jumps, Shimada lands a triple lutz-triple toe combination. Once the jumping passes are finished, the focus shifts to footwork, final spins and the finishing pose, followed by applause.

Viewers are discussing the quality of the individual elements, the smooth execution and the expression in the performance. One of the most-liked comments echoes the commentator's observation about quality throughout the routine.

Figure skating already has a substantial place among SBS Sport's most-watched Shorts, with performances by Ilia Malinin and the pair Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara prominent in that collection. Shimada's clip adds a women's singles gold to that skating showcase, with both the triple axel and quad toe captured in the opening stretch.
