Rising prices matter more to voters than Donald Trump's foreign policy, Adam Dubin argues in an interview that connects household finances to the possibility of Republicans losing control of Congress.
Speaking on Spain's public broadcaster Radio Televisión Española's RTVE Noticias service, the international relations professor at Comillas University predicts Democrats will win both the House of Representatives and the Senate in Tuesday's midterm elections. That is his forecast, not an election result.
The interview is titled "Trump podría perder la Cámara de Representantes y el Senado | RTVE Noticias", meaning "Trump could lose the House of Representatives and the Senate". It has drawn about 67,000 views since yesterday.
Dubin's explanation for Trump's weak popularity centers on the cost of living. He argues that voters are judging the president by rising prices and their own financial circumstances, rather than primarily by events abroad. The discussion also touches on controversy surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement, family separation at borders and tensions between Trump and artificial intelligence companies.
A Democratic victory would not necessarily produce a productive Congress, Dubin cautions. He anticipates mutual obstruction between lawmakers and the White House, with Trump using his presidential veto and both parties positioning themselves for the next presidential election. He also expects Democrats to pursue impeachment, alongside possible investigations into Trump and members of his administration. Impeachment by the House brings charges; removal would require conviction in the Senate.
On election disputes, Dubin stresses that state authorities administer and certify congressional results, so those results do not depend on Trump's acceptance. He nevertheless raises the possibility of court challenges, mentioning Alaska as one potential setting.
The interview later turns to Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan's Democratic Senate nominee. Dubin considers the appeal of his socioeconomic proposals in contrast with attention to his religious identity, before broadening his argument to public dissatisfaction with far-right leaders who, in his assessment, have failed to improve everyday life.
