‘Historic day’ in UK as Philomena’s Law comes into effect #RTÉNews
Survivors of Ireland's mother and baby homes living in Britain can accept Irish government redress payments without losing means-tested benefits or other state supports, RTÉ News reports, following the introduction of Philomena's Law.
The protection took effect on 30 October. In the report, Labour MP Liam Conlon says it addresses the position of around 13,000 survivors living in Britain, who previously faced a financial penalty through their benefits when accepting redress.
Conlon describes the change as a first in British law: a payment from a foreign government being ring-fenced in this way. He says the legislation follows eighteen months of campaigning.
The law is named after Philomena Lee, originally from Limerick, whose account of her son's forced adoption inspired the film Philomena, starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.
Her daughter, Jane Libberton, says she spoke to Lee about the news and that her mother was delighted. For Libberton, the significance extends beyond the immediate financial protection: "It's a lasting legacy."
A Labour MP who has represented Beckenham and Penge since July 2024. He previously chaired the Labour Party Irish Society.
