Ciara Mageean's gratitude towards those who helped her is at the centre of Micheál Martin's tribute to the Irish runner, whose death aged 34 was reported by RTÉ News.
Speaking to reporters outside, the Taoiseach praises her sporting achievements, then turns to her respect for grassroots Irish athletics and the people who supported her career. He describes an athlete whose influence extended beyond her performances.
Mageean won European gold over 1500 metres in Rome in 2024 and competed at two Olympic Games, according to RTÉ's accompanying coverage. Martin's statement adds a personal assessment of her sporting values to the broadcaster's reporting of her death.
He says she inspired people both on and off the track and represented the tradition of Irish athletics.
"And she's an enormous loss to the world of Irish sport, and to the world of Irish athletics in particular," Martin says.
Irish middle-distance runner who specialised in the 1500 metres and won gold at the 2024 European Athletics Championships.
