One woman has waited four years for the chance to vote out the government. A man has spent 25 minutes in line to cast his ballot. For the Tel Aviv voters featured in this election-day report, the recurring demand is change.
Speaking to Edmund Heaphy, deputy foreign editor at Ireland's RTÉ News, the news service of Raidió Teilifís Éireann, the opening interviewee explicitly backs Benjamin Netanyahu's centrist challenger, Gadi Eisenkot. "I know who can bring this change, it's Gadi Eisenkot," she says. Eisenkot is a former Israeli military chief who served in that role from 2015 to 2019.
The interviews were recorded during Tuesday's election, which the broadcaster describes as Israel's first since the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023. Its report says the final published opinion polls had Netanyahu and Eisenkot running neck and neck.
This short selection presents voters seeking a different government, rather than a cross-section of competing political views. A young man urges people to turn out because the country's future is at stake; an older voter says it is time to change the government.
The final interviewee makes the appeal personal. Holding a toddler, she says she hopes for high turnout and change: "we're aiming for a change, if not for us, for her."
Israeli general and politician who leads the Yashar party. A former military chief of staff, he was the main challenger to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the 2026 election.
