Israel displaces 1,200 people in West Bank after attack | RTÉ News
Around 1,200 Palestinians were forced from their homes in Hebron by the Israeli military, a Palestinian official says in an October 24 report from Ireland's RTÉ News. The operation followed an attack in which two Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers at a military checkpoint near the city, the broadcaster reports.
Deputy Foreign Editor Edmund Heaphy describes a blockade affecting movement throughout Hebron, in the southern occupied West Bank. His report covers closed checkpoints and house demolitions by Israeli forces.
"Hebron is a city sealed shut, every gate in and out closed to cars..." Heaphy says.
The report includes Benjamin Netanyahu visiting the checkpoint where the soldiers were killed. The Israeli prime minister had promised a large-scale military operation after the attack. During his visit, he praises Israeli settlers, calling them role models for the country.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric warns of the consequences for Palestinians: "Those closures severely restrict Palestinians' freedom of movement, access to basic services and livelihoods."
The coverage then moves to Tel Aviv, where thousands have gathered against Netanyahu ahead of the election. Interviewees accuse him of dishonesty and manipulating public opinion, while calling for accountability.
Speaking live from Hostage Square, Heaphy describes the crowd's mood as defiant and puts attendance at up to 60,000. He connects the demonstration to a closely contested election, with protesters pressing their demands for accountability as the vote approaches.
