"It's just a weird song," Kevin Parker says of "Dracula." Odd or not, the remix with BLACKPINK's Jennie gave both of them their first Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, as Rolling Stone's description notes. The magazine sat them down for its eighth annual Musicians on Musicians series in Boston, just before they took the stage together for the first time.
Their first meeting wasn't planned. They ran into each other at a late-night spot in Seoul through a mutual friend, Peter Utz. When the message about the remix arrived later, Jennie remembers her reaction: "I have to be on it." The recording itself happened over Zoom.
The most revealing stretch is about how differently they work. Jennie says going solo taught her how much of the job is pre-production, the hands-on control BLACKPINK never asked of her alone, and she likes building ideas with people in the room. Parker, who has long written and recorded Tame Impala's albums largely by himself, takes off on writing trips near the beach. "Like I won't speak to a soul for a few days, you know?"
There are good detours. Parker tells how Rihanna came to cover one of his songs after a late-night contact, admits that if he did half of what Dua Lipa does in a day he would need to sleep for four, and calls releasing new music "overwhelmingly, it's torture." He also recalls hearing BLACKPINK's debut track "Whistle" on a flight years ago, and drops a surprise: "I was on my way to becoming a professional astronomer when I got a record deal."
The conversation has drawn nearly 150,000 views in 15 hours, far past what a regular Rolling Stone video usually gathers in a full day, and its comment section is running more than forty times busier than usual. Many viewers make the case that "Dracula" deserves a Grammy; others talk about how relaxed two self-described quiet people seem together. Two Thom Yorke Shorts from the same series are also starting unusually fast.
Jennie saves her own news for near the end: a new music project is coming "very soon," one she says she has been working on since spring.
