Riot Games gains roughly 18,000 subscribers in a day
The publisher's channel mixes VALORANT esports with card-game accessories, character art and Baekhyun's virtual alter ego.
Why this story? The channel is adding 17,994 subscribers a day, 43 times a normal day (415).
VALORANT esports, Riftbound point trackers and a K-pop alter ego sit side by side on Riot Games' channel. That eclectic corner of the publisher's world has just seen an unusually large influx of subscribers: roughly 18,000 in a day, compared with its usual few hundred.
The jump is much sharper than the change in viewing, although daily views have also more than doubled. It is not clear what prompted the sudden subscriber surge, and the newest upload alone does not establish a cause.
That upload, "This Team is Absolutely Winning VALORANT Champs", arrived on October 18. Elsewhere in the recent lineup, "Baekhyun or Ezreal? #heartsteel #livemylife" plays on a connection that crosses Riot's gaming and music worlds: Baekhyun provides Ezreal's singing voice in the virtual group HEARTSTEEL.
The channel's older favorites show a similarly broad remit, from an early tactical-shooter announcement to a celebration of players who draw pictures in exchange for Riot Points. It is a publisher's channel with room for the people and creative work around the games, too.
