Trump makes first appearance after Democrats sweep midterms
Reuters' cameras found Donald Trump at an outdoor construction site, facing questions about whether the war in Iran had cost Republicans at the ballot box. Democrats had captured both chambers of Congress, and reporters wanted to know what he would do differently.
His answer on Iran: he would make the same decision again. Trump acknowledged that the conflict had pushed gasoline prices higher in the short term, but defended his actions as necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He also argued that oil prices had risen less than anticipated.
The exchange then turned from the election's possible causes to its consequences. Trump said he would likely get along with Democrats unless they chose to be destructive, pointing to his power to veto legislation. Asked whether he was worried about impeachment, he answered, "Not even a little bit." He said pursuing it without cause would damage the Democratic Party.
The Short's audience was far beyond Reuters' usual first-day reach for that format, even before a full day had passed. It was one of two widely watched Reuters clips from the appearance, rather than an isolated burst of interest in the channel's election coverage.
In the companion clip, Trump offered a different explanation for the Republican result: he said he believed his party would have won had he been on the ballot.
