Calls for restraint in political language are the focus of a brief report by India's Hindi news channel Republic Bharat, following Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The anchor says the Samajwadi Party, which belongs to the same opposition INDIA alliance as Congress, has distanced itself from Kharge's statement. Senior party figure Ram Gopal Yadav advised restraint in the language politicians use, according to the report. That is criticism from within the alliance, not an announcement that the party is leaving it.
The report also says Mayawati questioned politicians' objectionable rhetoric. A former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, she is referred to in the headline as "Behenji," the respectful Hindi address meaning "elder sister."
Archive rally footage shows Kharge speaking with former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot behind him. The short concentrates on the responses to Kharge, rather than presenting the full exchange in which he made the remarks.
