Ramit Sethi asks why a $78 jacket feels unaffordable

Laura loved the jean jacket. Buying it was another matter. In Ramit Sethi's most-watched upload of the week, an ordinary purchase exposes a much bigger disagreement: Jason thinks early retirement is possible, while Laura struggles to imagine giving up a regular paycheck.

Their conversation has reached about 177,000 views. Sethi works through the couple's accounts, discovers that Laura substantially underestimated their combined income, and separates what they can afford from what feels safe. Laura connects her fear to her family losing their home in 2008. Later, Sethi presents a financial planning firm's assessment that all three retirement scenarios they considered are viable. The episode includes paid sponsor segments.

Viewers are discussing that distinction between security on paper and security as a feeling. Others focus on how rental properties should be accounted for, ask for follow-ups with the couples, or appreciate Sethi describing nonverbal reactions for people listening rather than watching.

The conversation supplied several of the week's shorter uploads, including "How Do You Miscalculate $400K?" But "Money Expert Reacts to Terrible Financial Advice," a sponsored response to familiar prescriptions about jobs and homeownership, is currently drawing the most daily views. Rebecca and Matthew's earlier debt conversation also remains among the channel's busiest videos, nearly a month after publication.

I Will Teach You To Be Rich added almost a million views over the week, while its subscriber count held steady. Daily viewing is currently well below its usual level. Among nearby money channels, The Plain Bagel had a larger weekly views gain; Your Rich BFF and BiggerPockets had quieter weeks by that measure. For Sethi, the new conversation puts the difficulty of spending, rather than saving, at the center.

  • I really wish Ramit treated rental properties as he treated businesses on this show. Rental properties require their own cash reserves, own costs that are required to generate income, as well as whether it makes sense to draw cash from them at any given time as a source of your personal income.
  • I really enjoyed this episode. It really goes to show money is not the end all. I love how they communicate even when they disagree and how they love and respect each other and their alignment may be the highest I’ve ever seen in practice.
