Worshippers arriving at San Hipólito church in central Mexico City were caught in heavy rain as vendors and pilgrims gathered for celebrations honoring St. Jude Thaddeus.
Reporting outside the church for Mexico's NMás news network, Heatzi Valdez says devotees have come to ask for help or fulfill a religious promise, known as a manda. The downpour adds a practical difficulty to a gathering that also brings traffic restrictions and changes to public transportation.
Transit personnel are deployed on surrounding avenues as part of a security and traffic operation. Valdez reports that Avenida Hidalgo is closed between Guerrero and Paseo de la Reforma, the major boulevard beside the church. Metrobús, the capital's bus rapid transit system, has service changes and suspensions affecting lines 3, 4 and 7 because of the religious crowds.
The report also lays out the worship schedule, describing Masses beginning in the afternoon, a special service at five in the morning featuring the traditional celebratory song "Las mañanitas," and further services throughout the following day. The annual feast of St. Jude Thaddeus falls on October 28; studio presenter Said describes it as the church's largest celebration.
As the broadcast moves to aerial views of rain across the city, Valdez emphasizes the immediate concern on the streets around San Hipólito: pilgrims have priority, and drivers approaching the gathering should proceed with particular caution.
