Guadalupe Taddei's resignation letter reached Mexico's Chamber of Deputies on October 26, formally setting in motion her replacement as head of the country's electoral authority, according to Mexican news broadcaster NMás (N+).
The report places her departure amid allegations of contracting irregularities at the National Electoral Institute, known as INE. Its description says federal auditors are examining possible irregularities and conflicts of interest following reporting about alleged connections between people close to Taddei and the institute's suppliers. Taddei has maintained that the accusations should be verified and clarified through institutional channels.
The INE is the autonomous public body responsible for organizing Mexico's federal elections and coordinating electoral work at other levels. Electoral council member Arturo Castillo describes the institution as facing a crisis of historic scale.
The broadcast explains two stages of succession: the remaining electoral council members choose an interim president, while lawmakers begin the process of selecting a permanent replacement. In a subsequent upload, the broadcaster reports that Blanca Cruz García has been appointed provisional president.
Ricardo Monreal, who heads the Chamber of Deputies' Political Coordination Board, supports a shake-up at the institute but says resignation must not erase questions of responsibility. Senate President Higinio Martínez Miranda calls for a national campaign against corruption.
President Claudia Sheinbaum backs Taddei's decision to leave and urges the Federal Superior Audit Office to investigate thoroughly. She says suspicions of corruption cannot hang over the electoral institution. But she also draws a distinction between scrutiny and personal abuse, rejecting the sexist and misogynistic mockery directed at Taddei after the controversy.
