Seven world team titles in a row, and the eighth slipped away by less than a quarter of a point. At the World Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam, China finished 0.233 ahead of the United States, with Japan taking bronze. NBC Sports' companion upload puts it another way: China is the first nation to beat the American women in a team final in 16 years.
The highlights open with the Americans looking every bit like favorites. Charleigh Bullock leads off with a Yurchenko double full. Claire Pease follows with a Cheng vault, and a commentator calls it "the best one I have ever seen from her." Skye Blakely anchors the rotation by sticking her own Yurchenko double full, then delivers the team's best bars score. "Skye Blakely is in a zone in Rotterdam," says John in the booth.
Beam is where the gold got away. Dulcy Caylor falls on her dismount, Pease answers with an attacking routine that is scored after an inquiry, and Blakely over-rotates her dismount but stays on her feet. Reese Esponda closes the floor rotation with a step out of bounds before the final standings come up.
The recap passed 37,000 views in seven hours, and its comment section filled far faster than the channel's usual handful on a first day. Much of the talk is about the title itself: many viewers call it overly dramatic and insist a world silver is worth celebrating. One points out that the Americans have kept a different streak alive, reaching the team podium at every worlds since 2001. Others debate form deductions and scoring, or note how young this lineup is with the Los Angeles 2028 Games two years away.
The channel also posted the team's own reaction, with Blakely, Esponda, Bullock, Pease, Caylor and Hezly Rivera talking through the final.

This competition was China's to lose, and they delivered. USA should be proud for staying right with them until the end.

@BriannamersonSee it on YouTubeFor such a young team they did great. 2 years to lock it in.
@mom2knSee it on YouTubeThey are doing great, competing strong and figuring out how to forge a path to the next Olympics without Simone - who may ultimately choose to compete, but they have to be able to do it without her, too. This is a loaded team gaining valuable experience.
@yayshowvids6427See it on YouTubeCompletely unnecessary headline, they did great. They qualified for the Olympics and got silver. This is a great start for the road to LA 2028. 🎉
