"I'm not Microsoft": Linus Sebastian's Linux guide leaves the distro choice to you

The Linus Tech Tips host covers everything from bootable USB sticks to Nvidia drivers, and he admits some games still need a Windows partition.

Why this story? One of the most watched videos since yesterday, with 921,862 views.

  1. 0:00Forced updates, Edge prompts and telemetry: Linus lists the Windows frustrations that make people consider leaving.
  2. 2:05Choosing a distribution: test-drive options on DistroSea, Distro Chooser and DistroWatch instead of taking his pick.
  3. 3:25Download an ISO and flash it to a bootable USB stick with BalenaEtcher or Rufus.
  4. 3:57Before installing, back up files, find hidden game saves and disconnect drives you are not installing onto.
  5. 6:32One directory tree replaces drive letters: what /home, /etc, /var, /usr and /dev hold.
  6. 10:30For kernel-level anti-cheat games and Adobe apps, he recommends dual booting; Proton handles many other games.

Do you like to put your laptop to sleep and have it actually stay asleep? That is one of the questions Linus Sebastian uses to open "How to Switch to Linux," a 15-minute guide that starts with familiar complaints about Windows: forced updates, an Edge browser that keeps pushing itself forward, and worries about telemetry.

He points to a Reddit user's automated migration tool, then recommends doing the move by hand, so you understand what you are changing. He also declines to choose a Linux distribution for anyone. Instead he sends viewers to sites like DistroSea, which lets you try distributions in a browser, and Distro Chooser. "My goal is not to make personal choices for you today. I'm not Microsoft," he says.

The careful steps get real attention: flashing an ISO to a USB stick with Rufus or BalenaEtcher, finding game saves in hidden app-data folders, and unplugging any drive you are not installing onto. After installation, he explains the single Linux directory tree that replaces Windows drive letters. "Don't freak out. You will get used to it."

He is also clear about what Linux cannot do yet. For games with kernel-level anti-cheat, such as Valorant or Call of Duty, and for Adobe's suite, he calls dual booting "the only bulletproof workaround." A brief archival clip of Luke Lafreniere makes the same point, alongside cameo clips of John Malkovich and Wayne Knight. The video also contains a sponsored segment for Meter.

The guide has drawn more than 920,000 views since yesterday. In its first ten hours, it collected about twice as many comments as a typical Linus Tech Tips upload gets in a full day. Viewers share when they made the switch, including one who moved over as a teenager to make Minecraft run better on the family computer. Others joke that the channel now seems to have a weekly Linux video. That is fitting for a team whose 2021 Linux challenge famously began with Linus accidentally removing his desktop while trying to install Steam.

  • This was surprisingly good. I'm a linux professional, so it wasn't useful to me, but for someone new this was actually a good concise intro overview covering a lot of useful information. The LTT linux videos have really come a long ways over the years, it feels like they know what theyre doing now.

  • Remember your bitlocker keys! If you are resetting your pc and have multiple drives, odds are windows have them bitlocked. Make sure you have your keys so you can access the data on those drives otherwise it becomes a nightmare.
