Linus Tech Tips tries luxury cinema without the luxury interface

The Kaleidescape review approaches five million views in a six-upload week spanning Linux, AI engineering tools and augmented reality.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Things we can learn from the video

Press to jump

  1. 3:10The Strato K has costly hardware, setup quirks and no included remote.
  2. 5:15Mobile controls and the on-screen movie library expose interface frustrations.
  3. 7:25Linus finds no playback scrubbing and criticizes TV browsing and store features.
  4. 8:50Linus praises image quality as 4K Cinematic average video bitrates exceed 100 Mbps.
  5. 12:15James and Shawn share their movie-watching impressions, with James highlighting 4K Cinematic.
  6. 14:15Linus rejects the purchase for himself because of its cost and proprietary ecosystem.

Linus Sebastian finds a movie image he calls the cleanest he has ever seen. Getting to it is another matter: the expensive player has no included remote, awkward browsing and no playback scrubbing.

That tension gives "There's a Secret (Better) Netflix for Millionaires" its substance beyond the title. Kaleidescape is not a streaming subscription. It sells movie downloads through proprietary hardware, with large files and individual purchases. Linus tests the Strato K, then brings in James Strive and Shawn Frey for their viewing impressions. James singles out the 4K Cinematic format as the reason to consider it; Linus ultimately passes. The video includes a sponsored NAS segment.

At roughly 4.9 million views, it is the week's most-watched new upload. Viewers are discussing the cable-box-like interface, the missing remote and the irony of judging pristine cinema images through YouTube compression. Some owners say their players are integrated into home-control systems, offering a practical explanation for that remote omission.

The rest of the schedule moves from extravagant viewing to everyday computing: a Linux migration guide, AI-cloned engineering apps, a dbrand-backed iPhone review and a Costco price-guessing test. The newest upload, "I was wrong about Augmented Reality," is sponsored by XREAL and demonstrates its Aura glasses. It currently carries the most viewing momentum, followed by the engineering-tools test and Linux guide.

Channel-wide viewing is modestly above its usual daily level, while the subscriber count is unchanged for the week. Among nearby tech channels, JerryRigEverything has had a substantial subscriber gain and Unbox Therapy is enjoying elevated daily viewing. Linus Tech Tips' own week covers an unusually tangible range: choosing an operating system, pricing a gaming setup and deciding whether a beautiful movie image can justify an awkward box.

What viewers say

  • The blue with white text looks like they haven't updated the UI since the early days of cable boxes when that was the standard design.
  • Oh boy I can't wait to see all these ultra high quality films through YouTube compression!
  • 6:09 is really cool. This would make me feel like I'm at the movie store picking out DVDs from a shelf. An alphabetized list would certainly be easier to browse, but this way is so much more fun and makes it easier to discover something maybe you haven't seen yet.

  • Oh hey it's finally this video! You mentioned it like a million years ago and I kinda forgot about it.
  • The reason it doesn't come with a remote is because it's meant to be integrated with an AV control system like Control4, RTI, Crestron, etc.

  • This isnt Netflix, this is just buying movies. A form of media consumption that the entire consumer base has forgotten exists
