Press to jump
- 4:22Folding the phone reveals its closed thickness and the display crease, which Martin describes as barely visible.
- 12:37Safari and Notes run side by side as Martin drags a Pinterest image directly into a note.
- 20:18A bike app displays with black borders, illustrating uneven third-party support for the folding screen.
- 21:56Martin's verdict: replacing a conventional phone with the Duo requires adjusting your habits.
- 23:28Potential drawbacks include the matte interior display, $2,000 starting price and lower-quality inner camera.
- 25:54Martin recommends trying the phone in an Apple Store before deciding whether to buy.
"If you're expecting this phone to seamlessly replace your current phone, I think you're going to be disappointed," Martin says near the end of "The iPhone Duo Review."
That is the useful wrinkle in a review whose enthusiasm extends from the unboxing to the page-turn animation in Apple Books. Martin likes the foldable, but his conclusion isn't simply that a bigger screen makes a better phone. It asks you to change how you use it.
His clearest demonstration comes with Safari and Notes open side by side. He drags an image from Pinterest into a note, showing what the extra space can offer beyond a larger version of an ordinary phone app. Later, Apple Books spreads its pages across the fold, while Outlook gets a split interface of its own.
Not everything fits so neatly. A bike app appears surrounded by black borders, and Martin identifies the matte inner display, weaker interior camera and roughly $2,000 starting price as potential drawbacks. He expects developers to improve their apps, drawing a comparison with the adjustments that followed the iPhone X.
The delivery is part of the story, too. Viewers pick out his collection of familiar tech-review mannerisms, recall the reviews they watched around the iPhone 5's launch, and ask whether the Duo works with his much-discussed Apple Polishing Cloth.
For all that knowing humor, Martin ends with a straightforward suggestion: try the phone in an Apple Store before buying. His verdict leaves room for someone to admire the folding trick without wanting to rearrange their habits around it.
