The inventions keep coming. Karen X. Cheng's latest is a weather snowglobe, joining a robot pen and a morning-news bot in a feed increasingly devoted to making things that offer an alternative to checking a phone.

Her channel is also having a much busier day: roughly 1.1 million views, nearly six times its usual daily pace. That is a channel-wide rise, not a breakout that can be pinned on the snowglobe upload, whose audience remains comparatively small.

The snowglobe video is a Google partnership. Her robot-pen upload also identifies itself as sponsored, while the channel's own description states the broader project plainly: inventing things to curb her smartphone habit.

It is a different brief from the dance experiments and camera tricks in her back catalog. "Girl Learns to Dance in a Year (TIME LAPSE)" remains her most-watched regular video, while her Shorts include "Low Budget Filmmaking #shorts" and "stop motion with paper cutouts." The recent inventions put that interest in making things to a more everyday use: finding reasons to leave the screen alone.
