Things we can learn from the video

Press to jump

  1. 0:31LSU needs a true quality win, Pate argues, rather than credit primarily for its losses.
  2. 2:21Notre Dame's placement above BYU troubles Pate because BYU won their head-to-head meeting.
  3. 5:07Indiana's defensive performances deserve credit even when its wins aren't visually dominant.
  4. 7:43Pate argues Kentucky's résumé deserves a higher ranking and says Notre Dame should not be above it.
  5. 9:44Arizona's blowout wins persuade Pate that the Wildcats belong well into the teens in his own poll.

Josh Pate holds the printed poll in his hands, but he isn't treating its order as sacred. Notre Dame's position is a particular sticking point: above BYU, which beat the Irish, and above a Kentucky team he thinks deserves considerably more credit.

"Notre Dame should in no world be ahead of Kentucky right now," he says. Kentucky's win over LSU matters to his argument. So does his suspicion that voters would see the same results differently with a more familiar football powerhouse's logo on the helmet.

The Week 9 reaction drew about 139,000 views in six hours, an unusually quick start for Josh Pate's College Football Show. The comments had already passed four times the channel's usual full-day total. Viewers are picking apart Notre Dame's placement against Arizona, BYU and UCLA; one commenter identifying themselves as a Notre Dame student questions the Irish's ranking, too.

But this isn't simply a tour of teams Pate thinks are too high. He pushes back against a viewer's dismissal of Indiana after its ugly win over Michigan, pointing to a defense that has contained consecutive opponents. Winning without looking spectacular, he argues, isn't the same as being unimpressive.

His treatment of LSU is similarly specific: quality losses cannot replace a quality win, though games against Alabama, Texas and Tennessee offer opportunities to change the argument. Arizona gets a different verdict. After its blowout wins, Pate tells producer Jesse that he expects the Wildcats to sit well into the teens in his own poll.

What viewers say

  • Let's be honest. The most underrated team and most impressive team in the top 25 are the Wildcats. (Take your pick of Kentucky, Northwestern, or Arizona.)
  • As an ND fan and student I don’t understand why we’re number 5

  • This poll is full of inconsistent "results.

Just looking at ND and UCLA, they both played Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Purdue. They both won all three. The main difference is ND has a loss, and UCLA is undefeated? It would seem reasonable to have UCLA ranked above Notre Dame
