Video taking off 7.1x its usual first day

A dad comes for his son, and a teacher has questions, on Jeremy Hambly's channel

The Short's comment section turned into a parents' meeting about pickup lists, ID checks and family safe words.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 86,143 views a day, 7.1 times a normal first day on this channel (12,214).

A Short on Jeremy Hambly's channel usually closes its first day somewhere around 12,000 views. "Teacher Gets Suspicious When A Dad Arrives To Collect His Son" did far better than that and was close to 120,000 views a little more than a day after it went up.

The premise is all in the title. A father turns up at school to take his boy home, and the teacher at the door is not ready to let him. That small standoff is the whole clip, and it has given viewers plenty to argue about.

The comments came in about twenty times faster than on one of the channel's usual first days, and they read like a school pickup line full of opinions. Many viewers describe the form schools hand out at the start of the year listing who may collect a child. Others ask why nobody simply checked an ID or asked the boy who the man was. One parent remembers using a family safe word. Some side with the teacher for being careful. Others think she went too far and that the father was treated as a stranger.

Hambly is better known for TheQuartering, his commentary channel, and this one mixes the two worlds. Alongside the school clip this week came a news video about GameStop's prices for a used PS5 Pro ahead of GTA 6, a sinking jet ski and a man tipping children at a lemonade stand. The school Short is the one that has viewers talking.

What viewers say

  • That is why they have a sheet you fill out at the beginning of the year telling the school who is allowed to pick the child up. If you aren’t on that list, you aren’t getting the kid.

  • We used to have a "safe word" to pick up our kids. If the person didn't know it, the kid didn't go with them.
  • I guess asking the kid if that's his father is too simple an option, huh?

  • She should just ask for an ID!

  • The school will usually have their names of people who could pick up that solves the problem right there

  • Around where I live, anyone who wants to pick up a kid has to register with the school previously. A person can't just show up at the school and pickup a kid. This administrator is doing the right thing.
