"Airbnb Changes Leaves Hosts Angry" is penguinz0's take on a travel annoyance plenty of people know: paying a cleaning fee, then being handed a checklist of chores before leaving. It drew roughly 1.9 million views since yesterday, a subject that reaches well beyond the internet drama his channel often covers.

He starts with himself. "I'm not a big traveler. I don't often leave Florida," he says, and when he does, he no longer books Airbnbs: "I stopped doing Airbnbs because I stopped seeing the value in it." Then comes the news that set the video off, a headline reporting that hosts can no longer ask guests to wash dishes, do laundry or make beds.

The core of the video is a TikTok from a host couple objecting to the change. They explain that waiting for the dishwasher slows their turnover, and that trash left behind "smells so bad." Then one of them says, "I don't want to be touching people's sheets." That is the line penguinz0 seizes on: "Then how can you have the gall to charge a cleaning fee when you're requiring all of your guests to do all of the cleaning for you?" His case is simple. "Hotels are better value," he says, and they don't send you off with a to-do list.

The last stretch borrows from fellow creator Dolan Darkest's "The Airbnb Meltdown," which collects Reddit reactions. One host announces a higher cleaning fee. Another describes running rentals as a hobby for showing off art and keeping millennials out of real estate. penguinz0 has fun with the idea of a vacation rental run like an art museum, and notes that the poster later deleted the comments and the account.

The comment section came in about half again busier than his usual first day, much of it from viewers swapping their own checkout lists, and many pointing out that housekeepers solve the sheets problem with gloves.

  • They were literally pocketing most of the cleaning fees while the guests did all the work.

  • If you are rich enough to own an Airbnb, then you are rich enough to just hire a cleaning company if you don’t want to do it yourself.
  • Probably worth remembering that AirBnB aren't making this change just to be nice. They're making this change because the combination of cleaning fees and being forced to clean anyway is pissing off customers so much that it's making people abandon the platform and go back to hotels. In other words, the behaviour of the hosts is making AirBnB lose money.
