Why would the most powerful ruler in sixteenth-century Europe hand his empire out in pieces? That is the question behind the one video History Matters posted this week, and it drew more than half a million views in its first day alone.

Charles V ruled Spain, the Low Countries, much of Italy and the Holy Roman Empire at once, with territory in the Americas besides. When he abdicated in the 1550s, the Spanish lands went to his son Philip and the imperial title to his brother Ferdinand, the split that divided the Habsburgs into two branches. The channel's short, plainly drawn format suits a question like that.

Five days on, the Charles V video is gathering views far faster than anything else on the channel. Behind it, a month-old short on why Britain joined the First World War and a spring upload on Germany in 1939 keep ticking along at a gentle pace. Overall the channel ran below its usual daily views.

That was true across its corner of explainer and history channels too. GeoGlobeTales, Invicta and The People Profiles all ran under their normal pace, so History Matters, third by subscribers in the group, was in good company.
