Trade talks, changing clocks and a Calgary moose fill Global's week
Carney's brief trade answer is the most watched new upload, while a wide-ranging Lorne Doerkson interview gathers momentum.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Canada not near trade deal with US before midterms, Carney said
Mark Carney takes less than a minute to give reporters his answer: Canada wants the right trade deal, not simply a deal before the U.S. midterms. That hallway exchange is Global News' most watched new upload of a busy week, drawing roughly 230,000 views.
Asked why Canada would entertain an agreement before the vote, Carney smiles at the question's framing before returning to the terms. "We're not at that position right now," he says, then walks away.
Across 65 uploads, the channel's Canadian coverage moves from that short answer to much longer political conversations. Premier-designate Lorne Doerkson's interview with Ben O'Hara-Byrne covers tax relief, British Columbia's finances, pipelines, ferries and assembling a cabinet. It is currently attracting views faster than any other video on the channel.
There is practical news between the political interviews, too. Heather Yourex-West examines how permanent daylight time complicates sporting events, business and border crossings as different parts of Canada abandon seasonal clock changes. That report is also among the channel's busiest videos right now. Bella Finn, meanwhile, has a less procedural disruption to cover: a moose crashing through a Calgary office window.
Global added about 10,000 subscribers over seven days, though its current daily viewing pace is less than half its usual level. Among nearby broadcasters, NowThis Impact had a particularly large week for views, while PBS NewsHour and Reuters are currently running above their usual daily pace. Global's own momentum is concentrated in Canadian questions, from what an incoming provincial government will do to whether neighboring jurisdictions will keep the same time.
