Carney says Canada isn't near a US deal before midterms
A widely watched Global News clip shows the prime minister stressing acceptable terms, without committing to wait until after the vote.

Canada not near trade deal with US before midterms, Carney said
The terms come first. Asked why Canada would consider a US trade deal before the American midterm elections, Prime Minister Mark Carney says the test is whether an agreement serves Canadians.
The hallway exchange in Ottawa begins with a reporter suggesting Canada risks being set up as the "fall guys." Carney smiles. "That's an interesting way of framing it," he replies, before turning to the conditions for an agreement.
"We're prepared to have a good deal for Canadians, the right deal for Canadians," he says. He adds that an agreement could benefit both countries, with Canada's interests coming first.
His closing answer is brief: "We're not at that position right now." That is not an announcement that Canada will refuse negotiations until after the midterms. It is a statement that an acceptable deal is not presently within reach.
Global News' Short drew about 180,000 views in its first half-day, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for that format. A separate September clip, showing Carney laughing when asked about Donald Trump's prediction that Canada would apologize and remove tariffs, has also passed a million views.
The broadcaster's coverage is looking beyond Washington, too. A separate report follows preparations for a Canada-EU summit in Montreal, where the two sides hope to strengthen economic ties and reduce reliance on the United States.
