Buchannon has a plane down. An advertising plane clips a parasailer's canopy offshore, and Stephen Amell's Hobie Buchannon, now a Baywatch captain like his father Mitch before him, takes the radio: "This is Buchannon. We have a plane down."
The bigger shock comes later, on land. Jessica Belkin's Charlie Vale turns up at his house and introduces herself with a shrug of a line: "I'm Charlie. From Texas? Biological daughter, any of that ring a bell?" She wants a job, not a reunion, and her answer to his doubts is simple: "Saving people is my purpose."
The trailer passed 93,000 views in its first 13 hours. For FOX, whose regular uploads usually collect a few thousand views on day one, that is a different scale. The comment section filled up too, on a channel where longer videos often start with almost no comments at all.
Much of that talk is about the old show. Viewers pick out the first notes of the familiar theme, a wall of plaques honoring original characters, and a moment near the 2:34 mark when David Chokachi reappears as Cody Madison, the role he played in the 1990s. Several ask for proper opening credits, and a few already hope David Hasselhoff will drop by as Mitch. Others recognize Amell's stern team speech from his years as Oliver Queen on Arrow.
The new crew includes Shay Mitchell, Hassie Harrison and Noah Beck, plus a recurring part for Livvy Dunne, the LSU gymnast, in her acting debut. The on-screen text bills Baywatch as "the most popular show in television history." It returns in January on FOX, with episodes on Hulu the next day.
