Peltola's narrow Alaska lead faces a ranked-choice count
FOX 9's Anchorage report explains why the Senate result remains unresolved, with the next counting stage scheduled for November 18.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 162,444 views a day, 38 times a normal first day on this channel (4,289).
Alaska Senate race too close to call amid Dan Sullivan controversy
Mary Peltola leads Republican incumbent Dan S. Sullivan by only a few hundred votes, and neither has a majority. That leaves Alaska's Senate contest waiting on something beyond the first-choice tally: where voters put their next preferences.
Reporting from Anchorage, FOX's Sarah Alegre explains the ranked-choice process. Lower-placed candidates are eliminated and their voters' next choices come into play until a candidate reaches a majority. The report also captures the disagreement over that system: one Anchorage voter wants it scrapped, while another values being able to choose more than one candidate.
The unresolved contest has drawn an unusually large audience to FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul's upload. The report reached roughly 162,000 views in its first day, nearly forty times the channel's usual start for Shorts.
Alaska's two Dan Sullivans were already part of the election watchlist, as we reported here. This update moves beyond the shared-name ballot controversy to explain the counting process and the wait ahead. Alegre says ranked-choice counting is scheduled for November 18, with official certification expected by November 25. As she puts it: "It could be a matter of weeks at this point until Alaskans get those official results."
