Cussed Out By My Own Mom!

Gabriel Iglesias reenacts a family introduction that goes wrong before his girlfriend has even reached the door. His mother takes one look at the woman getting out of the car and starts cussing him out in Spanish. Then his girlfriend answers her, politely, in the same language.

That sudden change in the conversation powers "Cussed Out By My Own Mom!", a stand-up Short with an unusually fast start for Iglesias. The routine begins with an audience question about whether his girlfriend is Mexican. She is, he explains, but his mother's assumption about her appearance sets up an encounter Iglesias can perform from every side: the angry greeting, the unsuspecting reply and the hurried apology.

He saves a little commentary for himself: "You see that, Ma? They make them in that color, too!"

The comments keep returning to that line, but there is more than punchline repetition underneath it. Some viewers describe being Hispanic and having people assume otherwise because of their appearance. Others discuss the awkward surprises that follow when someone understands a language they weren't expected to speak.

Iglesias supplies all the characters himself, switching voices as an attempted family welcome becomes a rapid retreat.

I’m white and Hispanic and anytime I tell people that I’m Hispanic they don’t believe me so I have that feeling

It’s always a good thing to learn a foreign language so you can understand what they say & then respond to shock the hell out of them…. I do it all the time & it freaks people out.
