What Is A Scene? Here Is A Simple Breakdown For Writers - John Vorhaus
Two days old, John Vorhaus's plain question has turned into Film Courage's busiest video of the moment. "What Is A Scene? Here Is A Simple Breakdown For Writers" comes from the man best known for The Comic Toolbox: How to be Funny Even if You're Not, a writer who, by his own count, has trained writers in 37 countries and made TV shows of his own in places like Nicaragua and Romania. It is now gathering views several times faster than anything else on the channel.
The week ran the way Film Courage weeks usually run: four interviews with working writers, each one about the craft. Michael Weiss, whose credits include Journey to the Center of the Earth with Brendan Fraser, came on to talk about his book Beyond the Hero and the relationships he says sit at the heart of great scripts. Stuart Acher, the Emmy-nominated director who once caught Roger Ebert's eye at Sundance with a short called Bobby Loves Mangos, argued that a story needs at least one of two things. His comment section did not simply nod along. One viewer pushed back on his view of how long a first draft should take, pointing to people who write ten minutes a day around jobs and family, and another asked why his name never appears on screen.
The newest arrival, Adam Argot's confession about why he ends up hating everything he creates, went up only hours ago. Behind them all, a full interview with Jason Eric Perlman, more than two hours long, is still finding listeners after eight days.
The channel ran a little warmer than its usual pace and added about a thousand subscribers. Among the podcast and interview channels of a similar size it is the smallest in views, with Toni and Ryan in another league altogether, but its audience comes for something none of them sell: the writing room, one question at a time.

Another great interview. 'Critique is a stop sign for creativity' is a brilliant way to think about how critiques influence the creative process.
