The Citroën Ami looks like an unlikely candidate for drift suspension and a spoiler. That is precisely where DUBS takes it in "this new car is stupid", which has drawn roughly 17,000 views in its first 19 hours.
He begins by laughing at the little electric vehicle's almost symmetrical shape and opposite-opening doors. But the stock drive brings out a more affectionate verdict. Its modest pace makes sense to him for urban journeys: "This is my perfect idea of an electric car."
Then he sets about making it thoroughly unsuitable for that sensible role. In the upgrade garage, the Ami gains a widebody kit, an electric race motor, all-wheel drive and drift suspension. Deep pink paint and carbon-fibre-style accents finish the transformation.
The appeal is watching that tiny commuter tackle the same kinds of drift zones usually associated with much more imposing machinery. DUBS finds it agile on the test track, then takes it to Red Road in the Shimanoyama Region, adjusting his steering and lines as he works on his score. Rain eventually sends him elsewhere, with Tokyo's Inner City Run providing the next testing ground.
Viewers have their own uses for the little box. One describes a rock-crawling build with mixed results; another has kept front-wheel drive for tight mountain passes. Someone else has turned theirs into a magic eight ball. The Ami's shape invites as much experimentation as its upgrade menu.
