Food, energy and knowledge are Abiy Ahmed's investment priorities, and at the Kremlin he puts nuclear power at the center of the energy pitch.
Addressing the Russia-Africa Summit, Ethiopia's prime minister says: "With Russia, we are moving toward our first nuclear power plant in line with the safety standards of International Atomic Energy Agency."
That is an announcement of intent, not an opening ceremony. Abiy describes Ethiopia as moving toward the project, framing it within a broader appeal for economic and academic cooperation.
DRM News's recording drew roughly 67,000 views in 17 hours, an unusually strong start for a regular video on the channel. Its projected first-day audience is more than twenty times the channel's usual level.
The speech begins with a much older example of cooperation: Abiy recalls a Russian Red Cross mission to Ethiopia following the Battle of Adwa. From that medical history, he turns to agricultural development, electricity and research.
"Capability now means artificial intelligence," he says, inviting Russian academics to collaborate with the artificial intelligence center in Addis Ababa. He also calls for joint ventures in special economic zones and simpler interbank payments, making the address as much an investment invitation as a diplomatic greeting.
Abiy closes his pitch by offering Addis Ababa as host when the summit next convenes on the African continent.
Ethiopia’s prime minister since 2018 and leader of the Prosperity Party since 2019. He is a former military officer.
